However, one of the most notable historical events occurred in 1388, when African pirates attacked the castle, forcing the villagers to flee.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Centuries later, Beatriz Fajardo de Mendoza inherited the lands where Benidorm would rise. She began repopulating the area, introducing an irrigation system that supported its growth.
