The History of Benidorm Castle and Its Significance

Construction of Benidorm Castle began in 1320. Progress was slow due to the difficulty of transporting materials to the site and a lack of labour—at the time, the village only had 50 residents.

The castle’s purpose was to protect the town from pirate attacks. However, one of the most notable historical events occurred in 1388, when African pirates attacked the castle, forcing the villagers to flee.

Centuries later, Beatriz Fajardo de Mendoza inherited the lands where Benidorm would rise. She began repopulating the area, introducing an irrigation system that supported its growth. Benidorm became an independent town in 1666 after gaining the Municipal Charter or ‘Carta Puebla’ from Polop.

Today, visitors can see remnants of the castle, including its moat, cisterns, and a wind rose, along with significant sections of its walls.

The Balcony of the Mediterranean: A Unique Viewpoint

For anyone visiting Benidorm, the Balcony of the Mediterranean or ‘Balcón del Mediterráneo’ is a must-see. From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the sea, the beaches, and the city’s incredible skyline. Locals often call it the Castle Viewpoint for obvious reasons.

The site also features the lovely Plaza de Santa Ana, where you can sit in a café, sip a drink, and soak in the coastal breeze and salty air.

The ruins of Benidorm Castle are located in this very square, Plaza de Santa Ana.

Benidorm and its surroundings offer a wealth of excursions. Here are some favourites:

Visit Tabarca Island

Larger and inhabited, Tabarca Island lies off the coast of Alicante. Once a pirate hideout, it became a fortified village in the 18th century, housing Genoese fishermen and their families. Its historic walls are now a recognised Cultural Heritage Site.

Explore the Algar Waterfalls

Located near Benidorm in Callosa d’en Sarrià, the Algar Waterfalls or ‘Fuentes del Algar’ are one of Alicante’s most stunning natural attractions. Visitors can explore waterfalls, natural pools, and caves. Admission costs €4 in low season and €5 in high season for adults. Children between 4 and 10 years old pay €2 all year round.

The Castle of the Count of Alfaz: A Magical Experience

If you love castles, you won’t want to miss the Castle of the Count of Alfaz (‘El Castillo del Conde de Alfaz’) in Benidorm.
